Immigration Procedures

    If you've decided to live in Mexico and it is not your intention to stay permanently or reside here, then your stay is ‘temporary’. Therefore you can work, study, conduct journalism, or performing arts or sports.


Studies

Mexico offers several options to start, finish or enhance your studies and if necessary, to obtain the final documentation, preparation of your thesis and presentation of your professional exam , as it has public or private educational institutions with official certification.

Furthermore, by studying in Mexico you can learn about our culture, customs, cuisine and traditions that have distinguished us internationally through the history.

Any foreigner wishing to study in Mexico must obtain a visa, except in the following cases:

  • Enter to the country as an exchange student with a maximum period of stay of 180 days.
  • For studies that do not involve official certification with a maximum period of stay of 180 days.

If you want to study in Mexico you can get the permission by the following ways.

  1. You are outside of Mexico, your stay will be less than 180 days and you have been invited by someone in Mexico + info
  2. Foreigners who intend to stay in Mexico with the purpose of conducting any studying activity are required to have a visa, if you do not have it, you must go to the consulate of Mexico closest to your place of residence to apply for it; or someone who is in Mexico can request your stay in the INM.

    Usually you get the visa in a couple of days, (you should make an appointment in advance).

    You will get a Multiple Migratory Form (FMM) that must be filled with the requested data.

    • If you travel by plane you will receive it during the flight.
    • If you travel by sea or land you must get one in the INM.

    Once you have entered Mexico you must go to the INM office near your place of residence within the next 30 days to request the change of your FMM for a Nonimmigrant card, submitting the following documents:

    • Passport or identity card and travel, valid for Mexico.
    • Fill out the basic form.
    • Five photographs (size 2.5 X 3 cm), 3 facing front and two right profile of the face, white background, with forehead and ears uncovered, without earrings and without glasses. Snapshots are not accepted.
    • Original FMM which you entered the country.

    Requirements

    1. Application Sheet
    2. Copy of your Passport or identity card and travel, valids for Mexico.
    3. Letter written in Spanish addressed to the INM, signed by the applicant requesting his entry to Mexico, specify your data, the type of studies, the name of the institution where you will study and the period of time
    4. Registration Sheet of foreigners in the official educational institution, or letter on letterhead signed by an authorized person, stating the acceptance of the foreign in an institution or official school or not incorporated or without official certification. These documents must specify the level, period of time or the types of studies.
    5. Bank statements, consular proof, scholarship or any document that proves the continued reception of financial means for your stay.
    6. To get authorization to practice remunerated activities like Internships or social services you must have a certificate issued by the institution or school where you are studying, indicating that these activities are part of the program.

    You can apply in any delegation of the National Migration Institute close to the applicants place of residencie.
